The Local Area

Louin

Our village lies in a curve of the River Thouet. Man has always lived here it seems - many stone axes and tools have been found in the area. Just 2 minutes walk from our front gate there is a 4th century Gallo-Roman hypogée, complete with sarcophagii, which together with the remains of a temple above, attest to the village's great age - it has houses that can be traced back to the 11th and 12th centuries and the remains of a castle and its moat can still be seen incorporated into today's village. An ancient lavoir fed by a constantly running spring supplies water to the gardens and magnificent potagers, planted in the true French country style.  Green roads meander out of the village in all directions taking you on quiet secret byways of discovery.

Airvault church Market Hall
Roman bridge St. Loup Chateau

Airvault and St. Loup are each barely five minutes away.
Airvault, an intriguing walled town, is the larger of the two and has an historic abbey, now an extensive museum, formerly attached to the beautiful romanesque church.
St. Loup, a quaint mediaeval town  attractively sited by the river Thouet, has a château and gardens to visit.

Vaux St. Jacques ParthenayParthenay viewpoint Country fair  Chateau

Parthenay, a twenty minute drive away,  the capital of the Pays de Gâtine, is a walled town with plenty of shops and supermarkets, brand-new swimming pool and annually a number of lively festivals, including a festival of games (board, logic, strategy, construction, etc. .... with a huge number of different games to try), music festivals and several fascinating and entertaining events aimed at promoting and conserving the charming mediaeval St. Jacques quarter of the old town through which the pilgrimage route to  St. Jacques de Compostelle passes.
