This
unspoilt region of France has a rich and varied natural history
thriving along its quiet rural byways. Ranging as it does
between the bocage and the plains, which, together with the
attractive valleys of the rivers Thouet, Thouaret, Argenton and Dive,
present a good variety of habitats where may be found on a
regular yet surprisingly frequent basis, Red squirrels, Beech
Martens, Lizards, a varied range of frogs, Praying Mantis, Field
Crickets, Stick-insects, Glow-worms, Dragonflies, and many different
species of butterflies to name but a few - quite commonly seen
from, and often in, the garden.

The
Scarce Swallowtail and Painted Lady butterflies were photographed on
one of the lavender bushes in our garden and the Star of Bethlehem
flower on local walks. In the meadow orchard behind our house grow
three varieties of wild orchids - the pyramid orchid the lizard
orchid and the bee orchid.
Also
we found, in May, resting in the garden, - the largest European
species of moth - the Great Peacock Moth.
Bird-life
in the region is plentiful with Golden Orioles, Nightingales,
Hoopoes, Buzzards, Cirl Bunting, Serin, Woodpeckers (Green, Greater-
and Lesser- spotted) being seen from the garden.
On
the plains, which lie just to the east of us, Hen Harriers are
regularly to be seen skimming the fields and, for the more
determined, the Little Bustard may be found there too. Black Kites
are quite often to be seen locally as are many other raptors.

Latin cross references).
Lake
Cébron is just a few minutes away where there is a wildlife
conservation area and bird sanctuary area with observation hide.
